Circa 1988

The human figure indoors seen through hazy light is a subject to which Stan Smith returned many times, in large oil paintings as well as smaller studies like this. One version of A Light Smoker was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1988, but several other works bear the same title. In some the figure is male, as in this study; sometimes it is female; sometimes the gender is less distinct.
