The colourful dance of Gothic geometry: Churches by Stan Smith and others
About the exhibition
Do you love mediaeval architecture? Do you know your Romanesque from your Norman? Can you tell the difference between Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular? Or does the whole business give you an attack of the Gothic horrors ? Well, maybe it’s time to view your national heritage through the eyes of the late, great Stan Smith (1929-2001)
We have just retrieved more than a dozen of Stan’s lively watercolours and sketches of English country churches, from Saxon to Victorian, some of which make John Piper’s work look dull and boring in comparison.
Stan was no god-botherer, far from it. But he certainly did have an eye for the life and beauty in that stern Gothic geometry.
For good measure - and just to make sure Stan doesn’t completely hog the limelight - we’re including a few more churches by other leading lights of our gallery: Nick Barnham, Adrian Ryan and David Rolt.
