About the artist

Inge Clayton (1942 - 2010) displays an uncompromising eroticism in her work. She came to London in the ’60s to work as an au pair and stayed. It was not long before she embarked on her career as an artist after enrolling on a course at the Camden Art Centre. An admirer of Kurt Schwitters and Oskar Kokoshka, the sensuality of her work is reminiscent of her Austrian compatriot Egon Schiele, though the eroticism of her nude studies is warmer and less harsh. She has a special affinity for the male nude, which she portrays with a deft use of line that manages to be both delicate and potent.
